Couples usually choose a wedding date for reasons that have nothing to do with the weather. A season that means something to you, a month when family can travel, the first Saturday that the venue and the church are both free.
That is the right way round. But once the date is chosen, the date decides your timeline, and most couples find that out far too late.
Here is what actually changes across the year on this coast.
The light is the thing nobody plans for
Sunset at Thembela moves by almost two hours between midsummer and midwinter. These are the approximate times at the venue's own position, mid-month:
| Month | Sunset | Month | Sunset |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 18:55 | July | 17:12 |
| February | 18:39 | August | 17:29 |
| March | 18:10 | September | 17:45 |
| April | 17:34 | October | 18:01 |
| May | 17:09 | November | 18:23 |
| June | 17:02 | December | 18:46 |
Golden hour, the soft light photographers want, runs roughly the last forty five minutes before that.
So a four o'clock ceremony in December leaves you a long, generous evening. The same four o'clock ceremony in June has you doing portraits in the dark.
The practical rule: in the winter months your ceremony needs to start earlier than feels natural. Around one o'clock rather than three. Couples resist this because it sounds early. Then they see the photographs.
Summer, November to March
Hot and humid. This is the rainy season on the north coast, and the rain tends to arrive as an afternoon thunderstorm rather than a grey all-day drizzle. It is often dramatic, often brief, and often over well before dinner.
What it means for you. You need a wet-weather plan you are genuinely happy with, not one you are hoping to avoid. Ask the venue what it is and when the call gets made. You also want to think about your guests in the heat, particularly the elders: shade, water, and not standing in the sun at two in the afternoon.
What is good about it. Everything is green. The cane is at its tallest and heaviest, and the long light means the evening goes on and on.
Autumn, April and May
Many people's favourite here, and it is not a coincidence that the calendar fills up. The humidity drops, the heat softens, the rain thins out, and the light gets lovely.
What it means for you. The sunset is already pulling back sharply. April sets around half past five and May just after five, so your ceremony wants to be in the early afternoon.
Winter, June to August
Dry, mild and clear. Days are pleasant in a way that people from colder parts of the country find hard to believe, and evenings cool down properly.
What it means for you. Two things. The sun is gone by just after five, so everything shifts earlier. And you will want your reception indoors with the evening in mind, which on this coast is what the glass in the Hall is for.
What is good about it. It is the most reliable weather of the year. If the thought of a thunderstorm on your wedding day keeps you awake, this is your season.
Spring, September and October
Warming up, greening up, and the light stretching out again. September and October are a genuinely good compromise: the weather is turning without the full summer humidity, and sunset has moved back to around a quarter to six and six.
A few things that are true all year
Book the light, then the schedule. Work out your golden hour first, then place the ceremony so portraits land in it. Everything else can move.
Guests travel. A real share of any wedding here comes from Durban, from Johannesburg, or in through Richards Bay Airport. School holidays and long weekends make that easier and the roads busier.
The evening is long if you let it be. Rooms on the property change the shape of a night. Nobody is watching the clock because they have an hour's drive ahead of them.
What we do with this
When you plan a date with us, we work backwards from sunset on your actual day rather than from a generic timeline. It is a small thing that makes a visible difference, and it costs nothing.
You can see how a day lays out on the planning page, and the spaces are set out with their guest numbers. When you have a month in mind, tell us and we will tell you what is open.
